Greenway Housing Cooperative

The inception of Greenway Housing Cooperative took place in July 1989 and is managed efficiently by a volunteer board of Co-op members and an in-house financial manager.  It is a diverse community including single parent families, traditional family units, retirees, and single people.  Each member, representing their household, purchases shares in the Co-op upon joining.  The price of these shares is refundable when the member leaves the co-op. At the writing of this document, the share purchase for Greenway Housing Cooperative is set at $3,000.00. In extraordinary circumstances when a member moves out, any funds owed to the co-op by the member may be deducted from the member’s shares according to our occupancy agreement.

Participation

Everyone who is a member of our co-op is considered to be the landlord.  This means that all of us living here have a responsibility to ourselves and to our neighbors to ensure that we are doing the best that we can to help with the day-to-day business.  It takes a variety of skills from several different people in order to do this.  Skills could include financial knowledge, administrative skills, gardening abilities; ability to do small repairs, etc.  We are interested to know what skills you can offer us that would help us manage our co-op.

Subsidized Housing

Our Operating agreement with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation requires that our Housing Cooperative allocates 30% of our units to be rented to low income members and in our case that is 8 Units out of our 26 Unit Complex.  British Columbia Housing Management Commission will fund the subsidy for these members.  The amount of subsidy that these units will be allowed will be dependent on resident member(s) gross monthly income.  This includes all income such as salaries, child support Gain benefits etc.  Proof of income will be required after the initial interview should you be short-listed for occupancy.

Other Subsidy

Each of our 26 units also receives a subsidy benefit from CANADA HOUSING AND MORTGAGE CORPORATION.  This is received each month and it included and calculated in the amount of housing charges shown elsewhere in this brochure.  Over the past few years, the amount of CMHC subsidy has been approximately $135 to $ 140 per month per unit.
